Colton VanMeter FFA Award
Career and Technology Director Shannon Gable recognized Colten VanMeter for his FFA accomplishments. VanMeter won the FFA Proficiency Award based on students supervised in agriculture experience. VanMeter is one of two in the last three years to receive this award as a student of Pickens High School.

Williams also reported that PHS student Jamie Waterman received a basketball scholarship and signed on to attend the United States Coast Guard Academy in New Haven, Connecticut.

PHS Cross Country
Pickens High School Principal Chris Williams recognized the 2010 cross country team and Coaches Jesse Scott and Robin Dunn. The team received runner up in Region AAA and was able to compete at the state level.

Carlton Wilson and Mike Ballew
Ballew recognized Wilson for being recognized by Georgia Association of Elementary Principals as a Georgia Distinguished Principal through the national Distinguished Principal recognition Program of NAESP.

Ballew recognized Wilson for HCES receiving the GAESP’s School Bell Award. This award is presented to schools for outstanding and innovating programming. Hill City won the award based on their 2021 program.

Mike Ballew and Donnie Craig
Superintendent Mike Ballew recognized Sheriff Donnie Craig for receiving the Georgia Association of Elementary School Principals’ School Patron Award. This award recognizes non-education originations or individuals for their contributions to the success of a school or school system. Sheriff Craig received the Patron Award for his commitment to the C.H.A.M.P.S. Program. C.H.A.M.P.S. Program is a 22 week character development program taught by Cpl. Chris Leake to all 5th graders. Hill City Elementary School Principal Dr. Carlton Wilson submitted Sheriff Donnie Craig for this award.

JMS Softball Team
Howell recognized the JMS girls softball team for receiving the Mountain League Championship. The team had a 10 and 1 season coached by Lana Callahan and Assistant Coach Brandon Rowland.

JMS Math Team
Jasper Middle School Principal Neil Howell recognized the sixth grade math team’s first place achievement out of 13 teams at Berry College. The sixth grade math team was coached by Tammy Duncan and Carol Wilson.

PCMS Cross Country
Pickens County Middle School Assistant Principal Dr. Nathan Buhl recognized the 2010 boys cross country team and Coach Claire Eubanks. The team won this year’s regional meet on October 12 in Gilmer County against eight other middle schools.

8-12-10 Superintendent Mike Ballew recognized the school board for participating in the Georgia School Board Association (GSBA) required six hour training activities. Ballew presented certificates from GSBA to the board.

4-H Award
Pickens County Extension 4-H Program Assistant Clarcy Kirby recognized Katherine Kirby for winning 1st place at 4-H State Congress Project Achievement.~ It was held July 20-23 in Atlanta.~ Her project was food safety and preservation.~ She gave a demonstration on keeping your food safe during an emergency such as a flood or power outage. She was recognized and congratulated by the board.

School Awards
Career and Technology Director Shannon Gable recognized PHS FCCLA club members Kayla Bobo and Katelyn Jones who received a Gold Medal at the National Conference in Chicago, Illinois for Chapter Showcase Manual. The FCCLA Advisor is Bonnie Risinger. PHS FCCLA State President Carlee Prather also attended. Jones, Bobo, Advisor Risinger, and Prather were recognized and congratulated by the board.

Pickens County Middle School Principal Chris LeMieux recognized Shelbi Fowler for their state recognition for excellent PSAT/SAT scores as 7th graders as part of the Duke Talent Search Program.

PCMS Wrestling
Pickens County Middle School Principal Chris LeMieux recognized the Dragons Middle School Wrestling team for placing at their regional wrestling tournament (Mountain League Championships); Jake Darby took 1st place at 138 lbs., Blake Buchanan took 4th place at 130 lbs, and Jason Roper took 4th place at 123 lbs. This team is coached by Sam Wigington.

Pickens County 4-H Program Assistant Clarcy Kirby recognized all the students who placed at the state-wide 4-H Cloverleaf DPA research and presentations competition at Rock Eagle.

Andrew Haygood
Jasper Middle School Principal Neil Howell recognized Andrew Haygood as Pickens County’s Spelling Bee Winner. This is Haygood’s second consecutive win for this honor.

Neil Howell recognized the JMS 7th grade JMS Dragonettes who won the North Georgia Mountain League tournament championship game.

HES Reading Bowl
Harmony Elementary School Principal Sherry Mullins recognized the HES Reading Bowl Team. This team placed 3rd out of 13 elementary schools at the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Northern Regional Competition. This is HES’s third year in a row to receive a trophy for 2nd or 3rd place.

Jasper Middle School Media Specialist Sherry Carter recognized the JMS Reading Bowl Team. The team placed 3rd in the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl middle school competition.

Ballew presented Special Education Director Christine Barker with a certificate from the (GA DOE) Georgia Department of Education. GA DOE recognized Pickens County School System for students with a disability graduating with a regular diploma and meeting the state drop-out goal for students with disabilities. Barker said thank you and passed certificate to Pickens High School Principal Chris Williams for his special education department.

Ballew announced the Title I Distinguished Schools and recognized the Principals of those schools. The Title I Distinguished Schools are Tate, Harmony, Jasper, Hill City Elementary Schools, and Jasper Middle School.

Jasper Middle School Principal Neil Howell recognized the 6th grade math team. The team placed 1st place overall, competing against 13 other area middle school teams. The math coach is Lynn Burns.

Pickens High School Principal Chris Williams and Pickens High School Media Specialist and Reading Bowl Team Coach Sharon Rasco recognized the PHS Reading Bowl Team. The team placed 1st in the North Georgia Region Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl.

Pickens County Reading Council member Sherry Carter recognized recognized the readers of the year. The Readers of the Year are Savanna Henderson 12th grade, Summer Riddle 6th grade, Raven Sparks 5th grade, and Ellie Christine Pool 2nd grade.

Parent/Community Involvement Coordinator Amberle Godfrey recognized all the schools Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) Officers and School Advisory Councils. They were presented with an appreciation certificate, gift, and a reception just prior to the board meeting.

PCMS Future Cities

LeMieux introduced the PCMS Future Cities State Competition team sponsors Sue Waters and Jill Liberatore. They explained the competition and said that the team finished second in “Engineering the Future” competition. These students were recognized and congratulated by the board.

Lemieux recognized Peyton Heath as the 1st place finish at the regional science fair this year.

Governor's Honors

Pickens High School Principal Chris Williams introduced PHS teacher Suzette Hermann. Hermann introduced the students that interviewed for the Governors Honors Program they are as follows: Michael Land and Chandler Cook in Math, Harrison Kreafle in Biology, and Jaz Lorenz in Theater. These students were recognized and congratulated by the board. Michael Land was selected to attend.

PHS Academic Bowl
PHS Principal Williams recognized the Academic Bowl team. They won the Georgia State RESA Championship at Rutland Academy in Athens. Those students were recognized and congratulated by the board. Team sponsors are Debra Schlenke and Seana Thompson.
