All grades are averaged such that daily grades count once, while tests and major projects count twice. For assignments turned in late, ten points will be taken off each day for up to three days. Assignments are not accepted late after three days.

Short Story – Weeks 1-4
- Teacher will select 8 stories from Elements of Literature text; questions and activities will be assigned according to standards listed on weekly lesson plans
- Mastery of 25 Literary Terms- discussion and lists provided before assessment

Poetry – Weeks 5-7
- Teacher will select 20 poems from text and outside sources
- Mastery of 25 Poetry Terms- lists and discussion provided before assessment

Drama – Weeks 8-10
- Reading – Romeo and Juliet
- Mastery of terms and dramatic concepts associated with Shakespeare – list provided
- Familiarity with the Renaissance Era and its impact on the development of world literature

Epic and Myth – Weeks 11-13
- Selected reading – The Odyssey
- Mastery of terms and concepts associated with epic poetry
- Familiarity with Greek Mythology and its impact on Western literature

The Novel – Weeks 14-16
- Student Choice of Novel based on Book Club Planning
- Familiarity with Theme, Characterization, and Style in the Novel provided in class discussion

Writing – Throughout Semester
- Emphasis on Technical Writing: production of brochures, posters, comparison of two literary selections.
- 6 Student Products of Different Types of Writing for Portfolio. These include student journals, book analyses, original poetry, expository writing associated with projects, biography, and technical writing.
