Construction, Carpentry, Plumbing, Electrical, Masonry

The construction program at Pickens High School is designed to teach students the basics of using tools, associated with the four different building trade areas, safety, blueprints, and basic layout of materials associated with the four trade areas. Students will be required to take Construction I and II before choosing one of the career pathways- Carpentry I &II, Electrical I&II, Plumbing I&II, or Masonry I&II. Once a student completes a pathway, they can enroll in another one if time permits in their high school career.

Textbooks: Contren Learning Series

Grading System
During the semester, students will be given grades on several tasks performed weekly. These grades will be weighted and combined to form their final grade. The grades and weights are as follows:

  1. Written Exams- 35%. Students will be given 7 module tests during the semester. Students can retake any test 2 days after it is given. The test scores will then be averaged together and entered into the grade book. Students will receive a grade for all 7 module tests.  If a student has not taken a module test by the scheduled date they will receive a 0 for missed module tests. These grades will count 35% of their final grade.
  2. Performance Tests-35%. Students will be evaluated on performing tasks using different tools. They will be given a rubric and graded from that. The performance grade will either be pass (100) or fail (0). A student must keep working on the performance until they pass it. The performance grades will then be averaged and entered into the grade book. If a student has not completed all performances for Construction 1 by the scheduled dates, they will receive a zero (0) for that performance.  These grades will count 35% of their final grade.
  3. Employability Skills and Work done in class- 15%. All work done in class will be given a grade.                                                                                        Employability skills include:
  4. Having a pencil (20 points)
  5.  Having paper (20 points)
  6.  Wearing safety glasses (20 points)
  7.  Appropriate dress (20 points)
  8.  Behavior in class and shop (20 points).

Students will be required to keep all work in a notebook. This will be graded every 4 ½ weeks during the semester for a weekly grade. These weekly grades will count 15% of their final grade.  This includes notes, worksheets, reading, and performance practice

  1. Final Exam- 15%. Students will be given a final exam over all material covered during the semester. This grade will count 15% of their final grade.

NCCER Credit
In order for a student to receive credit with the NCCER for the sections we cover, they will have to score a grade of 80 or above on their exams and pass their performance evaluations for each section. If a lower score is made, a student may retake the exam after a 48 hour wait and the grades will be averaged for a final grade. Students will have 2 weeks, from the original date the exam was given, to retake the exam to improve their grade. All Module and Performance completion will be sent to the NCCER for credit if we receive a signed registration and release form.
Policy on Absences
When a student is absent, he or she will continue from where they were before they were out. If they miss an exam they will be expected to make it up as soon as possible, because they know when tests are scheduled. Tests can be made up or retaken after school.
