  2. Dividers for your notebook
  3. At Least 2 #2 Pencils (Bring them every day!)
At least 2 pens, either black or blue ink (NO OTHER COLOR WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR ANY REASON!!! BRING THEM EVERY DAY!!!)
  4. A pack of 3x5 index cards to use for vocabulary flashcards/research project notes.
  5. A Smile and a Positive Attitude – required!

      (This is the most important!)

**No material will be denied to a child due to financial difficulty. If you encounter a problem in obtaining these materials, please see me after class.

Mr. Geren’s Classroom Procedures

It would be wise, nay, necessary that you have these rules and procedure sheets in the front of your notebook. I will grade this action!

DO NOT BE TARDY TO MY CLASS – “Tardy” means coming in after the bell rings.  “Tardy” also means running or walking through the door as the bell is ringing.  You are to be inside the classroom, preferably in your seat, when the bell rings or you will be counted tardy.  This policy is not negotiable. Three unexcused tardies equal one absence (see attendance policy).  All assignments missed while one is tardy will be counted as zeros; you will not be allowed to make up work missed due to an unexcused tardy.  See the PHS Tardy Policy for further information.

  1. ATTENDANCE - Five absences are allowed during the course of the semester (either excused or unexcused).  Upon the sixth absence, credit for this class may be denied.  See the Pickens County “Student Code of Conduct” for further clarification.
  2. COME TO CLASS FULLY PREPARED – YOU are responsible for having your books, paper, notebook, pencils, etc.  Please do not expect me to provide you with these things repeatedly.  I will keep track of how often a small “mistake” happens. I will understand the occasional mistake, but if it happens too often, break detention will be issued for each time you are not prepared.
  3. ABSOLUTELY NO FOOD, SOFT DRINKS, CANDY OF ANY KIND, GUM OF ANY KIND IN MY ROOM AT ANY TIME – You may have bottled water (No Vitamin Water, Powerade, Coke, Juice, etc.) to drink during class.  The cap on the bottle must remain sealed when you are not having a sip of water and YOU are responsible for any accidents that occur. Clean them up immediately without disruption
  4. USE CLASS TIME WISELY - Our class time will be designed for learning.  Please respect all class rules so that everyone has an opportunity to learn.  Do not complete your homework for other classes during our learning time, and please follow all instructions given.  SLEEPING IS NEVER “OKAY” DURING CLASS!!! Your head must be up at all times.  You will receive one warning; after that, break detention or a discipline referral.
  5. Class Dismissal:  Do not run for the door twenty seconds before the bell rings.  The bell does not dismiss the class; I will dismiss the class when appropriate.  If someone attempts to leave before I dismiss the class, then that individual will have to return to her/his seat until after the rest of the class has left the room.
  6. Handing in Assignments:  All assignments will be passed in when the teacher calls for it the first time.  This action does not mean that you immediately have to commence with talking.
  7. Possession of Cell Phones/CD Players/I-Pods/Electronic Devices:  Our class will be in accordance with PHS policy.  If any of above devices are visible or interrupt class, then they will be taken up and left at the front office for parent pick-up.   If a cell phone or any other device is out during a test, it will be considered cheating and the student will be given a discipline referral. If a student refuses to hand over the device, then a discipline referral will be written.
  8. BREAK DETENTION – Break detention simply means that you will be held after class during your break time.  You may have to serve this detention for disobeying any procedures above and for the following reasons:
  • Writing or carving into desktops, deliberately damaging walls, bookshelves, ANYTHING IN HERE!
  • Throwing ANYTHING in the classroom
  • Applying make-up, combing/brushing hair in class
  • Pushing, shoving, attempting to trip someone, any type of horseplay at anytime
  • Being inattentive or disruptive during class time, especially if it disrupts others around you

BATHROOM
Very important thing to know here!! You need to utilize your break time effectively, that means going to the bathroom, locker, water, etc. before you come to class.  I can’t say it enough!
Go before you come to class
Go before you come to class
Go before you come to class
I understand “emergencies” perfectly, however, repeated use of “emergencies” without a note from a medical doctor is uncalled for. Therefore, extra bathroom excuses will be issued at three (3) per the 9 weeks grading periods.  After that, a break detention will be issued for each time you are out of the classroom for any reason. It will last for the entire amount of time you are gone.  USE THEM WISELY!!!   Most teachers will not even allow one.  So, if it is taken advantage of, this privilege will disappear.

PLAGARISM:
Plagiarism will not be tolerated in this class.  Plagiarism is when you pass off the ideas of others as your own; it is stealing the ideas and/or the words of others.  If you do incorporate the ideas of others (either by direct quotation or by concept), then you must document those sources in MLA format.  If you are found to have plagiarized on a paper, then you will receive a zero for that day’s work as well as be referred for further discipline by the administration depending on the situation.
If these rules are broken, appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken depending upon severity of the situation and frequency.  Actions taken include break detention, additional assignments, or discipline referrals.

HOMEWORK/GRADING/LATE WORK:
All homework will be taken up at the beginning class.  If homework is not turned in within the first five minutes of class, then a letter grade will be docked. After this point, the overall grade will be lowered by one letter grade for every additional day that it is late up until day three, at which point it will no longer be accepted.  In the event of an excused absence, you will have the time as outlined to submit your work with no penalty.  After the tenth day following an excused absence, if the assignment has not been turned in, then you shall receive a zero for that grade. In the event of an unexcused absence, then the grades for that day will automatically become a zero, with no opportunity for a make-up.

EXTRA CREDIT:
Throughout the course, numerous opportunities will be given for extra credit.  You must be in class when chances are announced in order to qualify. If you are absent or are out of the room at the moment, you will not be allowed the opportunity.

GRADING POLICY: Very Simple . . .
Tests: Grades are counted twice
Quizzes: Grades are counted once
Daily Work: Grades are counted once
Home Work: Grades are counted once
Projects: Grades are counted three times
Final Exams:  15% of overall grade; **9th and 11th Grade English must take the EOCT (End of Course Test) and must pass to be eligible for a variance waiver on the Georgia High School Graduation Test.

***So, Mr. Geren sounds like he’s a mean guy, y’know?  Rules and stuff.  Hey, they have to be in place.  I am probably the easiest teacher to get along with that you will ever have.  I am also the coolest you will ever have! All you have to do is honor these requests, work hard, and do your best to make all our class experiences memorable and educational.

  WELCOME TO MY CLASS!
                             GO BOLD AND PROUD!

Mr. Geren’s Classroom Expectations

Expectations:  I expect this class to be an open forum for discussion as well as a safe learning environment. I will respect you, and I expect the same treatment.  To accomplish this goal, I expect you to follow the rules as outlined in your “Student Code of Conduct” and these few rules I have here.

  1. Respect others.  Do not speak while someone else is speaking.  Raise hands, take turns, and agree to respectfully disagree.            Simply – BE RESPECTFUL!
  2.  Stay in your assigned seat unless given permission to move.
  3.  Follow directions the first time that they are given.
  4.  Come to class prepared every day.
