English 10-1

Your sophomore year is an exciting and important year, and we want to make it as successful as possible!  We will study various literary forms, such as short stories, novels, drama, poetry, fiction, and non-fiction.  We will concentrate on various writing styles.  We will also study persuasive, expository, narrative, literary analysis, descriptive, and research.  We will also develop your skills in grammar, vocabulary, public speaking, and job seeking.

Classroom Supplies

The textbooks used will be The Elements of Literature, Fourth Course,  and Holt Elements of Language  and other assigned novels provided by the English Department.  You will need to bring your textbooks every day to class unless otherwise announced.  You will also need a three-ring binder notebook that will be divided into sections:  1.  literature/daily  2.  Vocabulary   3. grammar and  4.  writing.  Please do not keep other class materials in your English notebook.  The notebook will be graded using a variety of methods and will be counted as a test grade.  Please have a blue/black pen for most assignments.  Pencils will also be used on scantrons and miscellaneous items (#2).  Make sure your Internet access form is on file in the library.  An assignment notebook is recommended.

Grading

Your grade will reflect your effort and natural abilities so your participation in class, group work, and homework will be an important part of your grade.  Expect homework most nights!  Unit tests will be given after each literature unit, approximately every two-three weeks.  Unannounced quizzes will be given over reading material and class assignments.  Essays will be assigned during the course with sufficient time to complete.  Vocabulary quizzes will be given at the end of a vocabulary unit or come from the literature selections.  Everything should be kept in your notebook unless told otherwise.  Recitations and projects will be assigned as test grades.  You will be expected to complete all assignments when due!  Your grade will be as follows:

                                    Class work, homework, quizzes                     33%
                                    Journals, vocabulary, minor projects            33%
                                    Tests, essays, major projects                        34%

You are responsible for completing missed work.  Check with me before or after class or school for assignments.  Tests/quizzes/homework should be made up in a timely manner, so plan accordingly.  You are to follow the code of conduct outlined in your student handbook.  If you have difficulty, see me!  I will be available after school most days.  Please check with me first.  I want each person to succeed and your cooperation is needed to make this semester successful!  Please see attached classroom rules.

Be respectful              Be attentive                Be prompt                   Be Prepared

Creative Writing

Welcome to Creative Writing!  Because this class is an elective, we will not be as structured as an English class, but we must observe school rules and have some structure each day.

Grading

Two major areas will comprise your grade.  The first is the journals and portfolio writings submitted (see attached sheet).   The journal writings are important to help us build a team spirit and learn to share our writings.  Please expect to write an individual response for a group journal topic or have a writing assignment when you come in each day.  Returning students are also expected to participate in all class activities.  You will either turn in or keep your journal in your notebook to be checked at any time.  The portfolio requirements are due on the dates that will be given.  Lessons and ideas will precede the due date.

The second major area that will make up your grade is the literary magazine.  We made new strides in our magazine last year, but we want to do even better this year.  All students in this class will be expected to write and submit to the literary magazine.  A major part of the grade will be your involvement in the literary magazine production.  We will need layout people, photographers, writers (all), proofreaders, artists, graphic designers, cartoonists, etc.

We hope to add graphics and interactive elements to the magazine this year, so I hope some already know how or will be willing to learn.  We will also have people trained on the program we will use to layout the magazine.  We will use the computers in the room and room 230.  Please make sure you have permission before you automatically get on computers.  This class is not just for your own computer use to do your own thing!!!
