Math I Website

Math I
Welcome to Math I!  I am excited about the opportunity to get to know you, and I’m looking forward to a happy and productive school year.  During the semester, you will be involved in many fun activities and discussions.  Some of the topics covered in this course include functions, quadratics, probability, and congruency.  In order to succeed in this course, it is necessary that you do your work and ask questions when you do not understand something.  With the right attitude, I am sure that everyone can be successful.

Classroom Rules
1.  Bring all needed materials to class.
2.  Upon entering the classroom, have a seat quietly and start working.
3.  There should only be one person speaking at a time.
4.  You should stay in your seat unless you have permission to do otherwise.
5.  Do not touch those possessions that do not belong to you.

Grading
Cumulative Average

  • 60% of your grade will be derived from grades given on tests and quizzes.
  • 30% of your grade will be derived from daily work, including homework.
  • 10% of your grade will be derived from the Cognitive Tutor computer program

The Georgia End of Course Test for Mathematics I will be given at the end of the year, and will be worth 15% of your final grade.

Homework
Homework is considered an essential part of learning mathematics.  In order to be successful in this class, you must do your homework on a daily basis.  Failure to complete homework will result in a zero for every missed assignment.

Tutoring
I will be available in my room after school on Wednesdays from 3:15-4:15 for extra help.  Please let me know in advance if you plan on staying after school to take advantage of this opportunity.  Also for quick questions about any assignments, students can e-mail me (gingercaylor@pickens.k12.ga.us).  I will do my best to answer these questions in a timely manner.

Missed Work

All assignments will be written on the classroom calendar.  It is the students’ responsibility to find out if assignments were made during their absence. Work from an absence is expected to be turned in three days to receive full credit.  After three days, a student must follow the make-up standards procedure to receive credit.  Tests and quizzes may be made up before or after school.  All make-up work is done outside of the regular class activities.  Many of the class activities will be difficult to fully replicate individually, so please plan to be in school every possible moment.

Classroom Materials
1.  A 1.5” or 2” loose-leaf three-ring binder
2.  Plenty of pencils (Pens are not allowed.  There will be a ten point penalty for anything done in pen.)
3.  Wide or college rule lined paper for three-ring binder
4.  Three to five dividers for your notebook
5.  Graph paper

Class Expectations

  • When the bell rings, all students are expected to be working on the warm-up.  Failure to work on the activities at the beginning of the class could result in the giving of a consequence.
  • Working together is acceptable and even encouraged when appropriate.  Students who work together outside the classroom are expected to note that fact at the top of the page, along with the date(s), time(s), and all participants.  Students caught cheating or helping others to cheat will be disciplined according to the academic honesty policy.
  • No candy, food, gum, or drinks other than water is allowed.
  • Do not take out makeup, hairbrushes, or mirrors during class.  Those are bathroom items not classroom items.
  • Show your work.  Problems that require explanation and/or many steps will require you to show your work to receive full credit.  (Show no work, and receive no credit.)
  • No cell phones or I-pods are to be used at anytime during class.
  • All school policies located in the Pickens High School students code of conduct are in effect at all times.

Group Work
Group work is considered a privilege. If students cannot follow the rules, then we will resort to individualized class work.
1.  Each member is responsible for his or her own work including a formal write-up using complete sentences.  If you disagree with your group, feel free to provide your own solutions to the problems.  Each group member is further responsible for his or her own behavior.
2.  Each member of the group must be willing to help any other group member who asks for help without putting them down.
3.  You should only ask the teacher for help when all team members have exhausted all available resources and no group member can answer the question.
4.  All group members should talk quietly enough so that no individual can be heard outside of the group.  Each individual should be accepting of all mathematical ideas expressed by other students.  Disagreements should be handled in a mature manner.
5.  On-task and off-task behavior will be documented for your daily participation grade.

Consequences

1st offense-Verbal Warning                                 2nd offense-Break Detention
3rd offense-Phone call to parents/guardians                    4th offense-Parent conference
5th offense, etc.-Office referral

Computer Work

  • It is not appropriate to be on any program other than what is required by the assignment.
  • Specifically, no games, music, download, or similar sites may be visited at any time.

Individual work using Cognitive Tutor

  • Students are expected to complete assigned chapters from the Cognitive Tutor software.
  • Work done within this program is expected to be completed without outside assistance.
