CTI

CAREER AND TECHNICAL INSTRUCTION COURSE DESCRIPTION

Career & Technical Instruction (CTI) is a supervised occupational training/work study program.  The purpose of the program is to develop basic occupational skills necessary for future employment in business and industry.  The work-study arrangement combines classroom instruction in the school with supervised part-time employment.  A student learner in the CTI program divides his/her time between school and a part-time paid job, spending approximately one-half of his/her time in each.  The in-school schedule is made up of a combination of subjects:  those required for graduation and those related to his/her job activities.  Job time is devoted to performing tasks normally assigned to a new worker in the occupation.

Objectives of CTI

  1. Provide knowledge, which will assist student in seeking and obtaining employment.
  1. Provide student with a safe and educationally sound work environment, while insuring that student learners receive adequate compensation for their efforts.
  1. Provide students with a knowledge base to make more realistic decisions about careers while considering aptitudes, interests, and abilities.
  1. Provide students with knowledge of good work habits to facilitate the transition into the world of work.
  1. Provide students with related technical knowledge that will compliment skill training, which occurs on their jobs.
  1. Provide students with leadership and skill development through active participation in CTI.
  1. Provide students with knowledge about social interaction in a work setting analyzing the various relationships that exist.
  1. Provide students with counseling that will insure successful synthesis of various institutions influencing their maturation: school, work, community, and family.
  1. Provide knowledge germane to the U.S economy and its intricate system of checks and balances and compare the U.S system with other economic systems.
  1. Provide knowledge, which will promote student’s civic mindedness and productive citizenship.
  1. Provide knowledge, which will enhance student’s abilities to be more competent consumers while exercising prudence and conservations of energy.

  2. Provide students with knowledge concerning the historical development of vocational education and the multiplicity of options that exist for advanced training.

CTI POLICIES

Grading

The student enrolled in a work program will receive two separate grades.  One grade will be given for the class portion of the work program.  Another grade will be given for the work portion of the work program.  A failure of one portion of the work program will not mean failure in the other part of the work program.

Class Grade Determination

The Nine Weeks Grade will be determined as follows:

Test- 40% of class grade
Tests will be given at the end of each unit.  When these tests are returned, the student is expected to put the test in his/her notebook for study purposes for the exam.

Daily Grades- 60% of class grade
Daily grades will consist of quizzes, class work, attitudes, and habits.

The Semester Grade will consist of:

Final Exam – 15%
1st Nine Weeks Grade – 42.5%
2nd Nine Weeks Grade – 42.5%

Work Grade Determination

Work Evaluations-70 % of Work Grade

Employers will be given evaluation forms every nine weeks.  These forms will be taken and returned by the students.  The evaluation will count 70% of the student’s grade.  Any student who does not return his/her evaluation form on time will have ten points per day deducted from his/her work grade.  If the evaluation form is not returned in time for the coordinator to post grades for the evaluation period, the student will receive a grade of 0 for that grading period.  Each nine-week evaluation will be averaged together to determine the student’s final work grade.  The coordinator will be visiting employers every nine weeks, not necessarily during the time when employers will be completing evaluation sheets.

Work Verification- 15% of Work Grade

Students are required to turn in pay stubs and work verification forms from their employers. These pay stubs and work verifications are to verify that the students worked the hours indicated and to verify continuous employment.  Students are required to keep a time sheet of hours on the job in their folders in the CTI classroom.  These should be updated each day.

Daily Sign-Out – 15% of Work Grade

All students are required to sign-out in the CTI classroom on a daily basis.  No exceptions!

School Rules

Detention

If a teacher gives a student detention, the students must serve the detention at the convenience of the teacher.  Work commitments DO NOT excuse a student from serving detention.

In-School Suspension

If a work program student is given in- school suspension, the student may not leave early to go to work but must remain in ISS all four periods.  Work commitments DO NOT excuse a student from in-school suspension.

Leaving Campus

No work program student is to be on campus more than ten minutes after his/her last class without the written permission of the coordinator. Any student found on campus past this period without the coordinator’s permission could be given detention with the coordinator.

Out-of-School Suspension

Any work program student who is suspended from school may not report to work during the school day.  Students may, however, work regular hours on weekends.  If the student does report to work while he/she is suspended, his/her grade will be reduced by 10 points per day that he/she works.  The coordinator will notify the student’s employer that he/she has been suspended and of the length of the suspension.

Absences

Absences From Work

If a student is absent from school, he/she MAY NOT go to work.  Students who are absent can expect the coordinator to call their employer to verify that the students are not at work and that they have called in sick in a timely manner to allow the employer to get a replacement for the ill student.  Any student who attends work but does not come to school more than three times during a semester may fail the work portion of CTI and may not register for a second semester of CTI or any other work program.

Make-up Work

Tests must be made up before school within five school days.  Any student who fails to make up work within the time limit will receive a zero for those assignments.

Check-Ins

Any student who checks into school after 11:00 is considered absent from school.  Consequently the student will not be allowed to go to work unless the student has a doctor’s appointment and brings verification to the coordinator, or the student has been to court, or the student has attended a funeral.

Check-Outs

Any student who checks out of school MAY NOT report to work.  If the student is too sick to stay in school then he/she is too sick to go to work.  Students who report to work after checking out of school sick will have ten points deducted from his/her final work grade.

WORK PROGRAM STUDENTS SHOULD MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO SCHEDULE DOCTOR’S APPOINTMENTS ON THE STUDENT’S DAY OFF OR BEFORE THE STUDENT REPORTS TO WORK—NOT DURING SCHOOL.

Work Rules

Approved Employment

Students must be employed at a school approved job on the first day of each semester.  The coordinator is available to assist students in finding employment prior to and during each semester.

Work program students may have only one job in which they work 15 hours per week and which counts for work credit.  Any student who has a second job must have the job approved by the work program coordinator prior to the student accepting the position.

Work Hours

Students leaving school for one class period must have a job at which they work an average of 7 ½ hours Monday through Friday.  More hours may be worked on weekends and holidays.  Students will receive one unit of credit for working 7 ½ hours per week and those students leaving two periods will receive two units for working 15 or more hours per week.  Students must work at least 3 days out of the 5 school days each week.  Students are not allowed to work excessive hours that may cause them to loose study time.

Fired From Job

Any student who is fired for just cause form his/her job will earn a work evaluation grade of an “F” for the current grading period.  The student will be put on formal probation.  A probation contract will be drawn up that the student, parent, coordinator, and the principal must sign.  This contract makes each person involved aware of the policies that the student must adhere to earn credit for the work program.  The coordinator will attempt to assist the student in finding another job.  The student must have another job within two weekends or ten school days or be subject to further disciplinary action.

Students who are fired from a job for stealing, taking or dealing drugs, drinking alcohol, or any other reason which may result in arrest by the police will be given an “F” for the remainder of the semester for the work portion of CTI and will be subject to disciplinary action by the school because the workplace for work students is a part of the school day.

Work Etiquette

All students are expected to be on time for work, to be dressed properly for the job, and to fulfill their duties to the best of their abilities.

Transportation

Students are expected to provide their own transportation to and from work.

Quitting A Job

No student may quit a job without completing the following procedures: filling out a job change request form, having the form signed by the present employer, the new employer, and the student’s parents before it is given to the coordinator.  The student must have a conference with the coordinator to be given permission by the coordinator to give notice.

All students must give a two-week notice before quitting.  If the employer requires that a student fulfill this notice the student must work his/her regular hours for the two-week period.

NO CTI STUDENT MAY CHANGE JOBS MORE THAN ONE TIME DURING THE YEAR UNLESS THE JOB CHANGE IS ONE THAT WILL PUT THE SUTDENT INTO A JOB WHICH HAS CAREER POTENTIAL.

NO STUDENT MAY CHANGE JOBS WITHOUT HAVING ACQUIRED ANOTHER JOB.

Any student who violates these procedures will be given a 50 for the current 4½ week portion of the nine weeks grading period.

Under certain circumstances students may leave a job without notice or without notifying the coordinator prior to quitting the job.  These circumstances include sexual harassment, personal knowledge of illegal activity, physical violence against the student, the employer or anther employee, abusive behavior by the employer.  If the student leaves an employer for one of these reasons the student must inform the coordinator the next school day.  If the coordinator is not informed on the next school day the student will receive a 50 for quitting a job without permission.

Laid Off From Job

Laid off is defined as being let go from a position because there is not enough work for a particular position.  Generally speaking the best workers are not laid off.  If an employer has let some persons go because business is slow he/she will let the marginal employees go first.  However if a student is let go because of work slowdown the student grade will not be affected in any way.  The student will have 10 school days to find another place of employment and the coordinator will make every effort to assist the student in finding employment.  Students may have to take a position that is not exactly the kind of position that they would like in order to be employed with the 10-day limit.

If a student is laid off, it does not count as a job change.

Job Status Change

If a student’s job status should change during the school year, the coordinator should be notified immediately.  If not, it could result in the student being removed from the program.

Drug Testing

If a student tests positive for an illegal substance at their place of employment, the school will treat it the same as testing positive on campus.

Student Professional Organization

CTI students are expected to join and participate in CTI Youth Organization.  CTI Youth Organization is a local youth organization for students enrolled in CTI.  Dues are $10 and should be paid before the end of the first nine weeks.

PICKENS HIGH SCHOOL

CTI COOPERATIVE WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAM

Policies and Guidelines

Pickens High School offers an early release plan for students who are enrolled in a Cooperative Work Experience Program.  The intent of this program is to provide for the differing educational, economic, and vocational needs of the students.

Cooperative education is more than “getting a job to earn money”.  It is on-the-job training.  Training schedules are arranged by the coordinator, employer, student, school administration, and parents.

Provisions for the Cooperative Work Experience Program will be made in accordance with the conditions and stipulations set forth below:

  1. Parents of students engaged in a Cooperative Work Experience Program should have full knowledge of the program.  Students will be graded periodically (each grading period) by their employer on skills and knowledge as well as attitudes, etc.
  1. Students who qualify for the early release plan may leave school after the second or third period class, and must leave school grounds at the end of their class for their work experience and should not return (except by permission of the coordinator).  On/off days students are released to their homes only unless other arrangements have been made with the coordinator.
  1. The workplace for work students is a part of the school day and rules that apply at school apply at the workplace.  For instance, if a drug test is administered on the job and the student tests positive for an illegal substance; then the student would be punished accordingly at school.
  1. The release time will enhance the student’s educational and/or occupational opportunities.
  1. All students must be scheduled for at least two classes per day including the co-op class. The student must be prepared for all classes and be on time.
  1. The school may revoke the privilege of released time at any point that it considers revocation of such privilege to be in the best interest of a given student.
  1. The student may earn one unit for the co-op class or related class.  If the student works the specified number of hours (7 ½ hours for one semester credit and 15 or more for two credits) for the program in which he/she is enrolled and is employed in a job related to the program and its objectives.  Students are not allowed to work excessive hours that may cause them to loose study time.  Satisfactory work must be performed to receive credit for on-the-job training.  Students should not depend on a unit of the on-the-job training for graduation requirements.
  1. Students must obtain a Social Security card.
  1. Work permits must be obtained for all students under 18 years of age.  One copy goes to the employer, one to the school system, and one to the Georgia Department of Labor.  (Students under 18 will not receive credit for OJT until they have completed a work permit and all students must complete other forms required by the program as part of the OJT grading process.)
  1. Students may not work at their jobs (nor claim work credit) on any day they are absent from school except by special permission from the coordinator.  If a student must be absent from work, he/she is expected to call his/her employer and teacher as soon as possible on the day of his/her absence.  Failure to call in when absent and tardiness to your job will not be tolerated.
  1. Students should enter daily on his/her work sheet the number of hours worked the previous day (CTI students must complete work summaries and sign-out sheets daily and total them at the end of each week as part of the grading process for OJT).  Check stubs or verification of hours worked from the employer will be required.
  1. The coordinator will visit the students and employers four times each year.
  1. Enrolling in a Cooperative Work Experience Program does not guarantee a student employment.  Coordinators will assist students in obtaining employment in a proper training station.
  1. Students may be required to change jobs if they are not working in a proper training station.  If a proper work experience cannot be obtained, students must be placed in other regular classes.
  1. If during the school year, the student’s work is terminated for some reason, reasonable time (two weeks) will be allowed for the student and coordinator to seek another training station for the student.  If another training station cannot be obtained, the student will be transferred from the program to other regular classes.  If a student loses his/her job through negligence or misdemeanor, he/she will be dropped from the program and will not receive credit.
  1. Students should inform the coordinator about any unpleasant job situation.  By conference with the student and employer, the coordinator will then determine the course of action to be taken.  Quitting jobs without notice will not be tolerated.
  1. Either the parent/guardian or the student who has been granted release time will be responsible for notifying the co-op coordinator in person, by telephone, or by letter of any change in the student’s employment status (for example, loss of job, change of job, failure to use release time constructively, etc.)
  1. Students must dress and conduct themselves at work according to standards agreed upon by the employer and the coordinator.  Inappropriate conduct, dress, or grooming may cause the student to be dismissed from the Work Experience Program.
  1. The related Club is an integral part of the program.  All students should be active members of their respective Clubs.  Coordinators may require attendance to club functions such as field trips, school functions, and banquets as part of the training of the program.  (All CTI students are strongly urged to join and be active in CTI Youth Organization.)
  1. Students must have passed all graduation tests or they may be put into classes designed to remediate them.
  1. If a work program student is given in- school suspension, the student may not leave early to go to work but must remain in ISS all four periods.  Work commitments DO NOT excuse a student from in-school suspension.

  1. Passing grade in the CTI class and CTI work

  1. If the student has been placed on probation, he/she must have followed the terms of his/her probation.
