Spanish I

Course description:
Spanish 1 is an introduction to Spanish language and culture. Students will learn basic communication skills, develop a limited but practical vocabulary through daily oral and written practice, and acquire an appreciation of the rich and diverse culture of the peoples of Latin America, the Caribbean and Spain.

Course content:
General vocabulary related to the following categories: geography and nationalities, numbers and time, weather and seasons, family, clothing and colors, food, sports, entertainment and travel.

General grammatical topics:
definite and indefinite articles; subject-verb agreement; rules on number and gender; interrogatives; contractions; key conjunctions and prepositions; subject pronouns; direct and indirect object pronouns; possessive adjectives; ar,er,and ir regular verbs in the present tense; stem-changing verbs; important irregular verbs including ir, dar,ser,estar,tener and hacer, the object marker a; gustar-type verbs.

The nine-week grade is based on the following weighted categories:

Participation: 40%
Homework: 20%
Quizzes: 40%

Each nine- week grade is worth 42.5% of the semester grade
The final exam is worth 15% of the semester grade

General classroom rules:
No food or drink except bottled water
Be prompt, attentive, and respectful
Take care of restroom needs before class
Students are responsible for making up all missed work promptly after an absence

Spanish II

Course description
This course builds on the basic foundations of grammar and syntax provided in Spanish 1. Students are introduced to an array of verb tenses and provided with a much broader vocabulary. Along with a greater emphasis on spoken Spanish, this allows for much greater expression and communication.

Course content
General vocabulary related to the following categories; bus, train and plane travel, hotels and vacations, money, commerce, shopping and market activities, food and drink, restaurants and nightlife, travel and telecommunications, clothing, hobbies and sports, daily life and work in Spanish-speaking cultures.

General grammatical topics:
The present progressive tense, the preterite tense, irregular preterite verbs, saber and conocer contrasted, more information on the uses of ser and estar, the imperfect and the contrast with the preterite tense, demonstrative adjectives, two object pronouns in the same sentence, patterned verbs in the preterite, the passive voice with se, comparatives and superlatives, demonstrative adjectives, the future tense and key irregular verbs in the future, the conditional tense and key irregular conditional verbs, the present perfect tense and key irregular past participles.

Spanish III

Course description
Spanish 3 is an elective and weighted class, and therefore requires a greater degree of commitment and seriousness of purpose than Spanish 1 and 2. More emphasis is placed on speaking and reading the language, and more key grammatical concepts are introduced. The presentation of wide array of written material covering food, music, dress, sports, art, and history should foster an appreciation of Spanish language and culture. It is hoped that by the end of this course the student will have acquired enough exposure to written and spoken Spanish to provide a foundation for fluency should he or she choose to continue with the language in the future.

Course content
Students will be presented with a range of source materials, including textbook lessons, short stories, newspaper articles, excerpts from important works of Spanish literature, and topical materials from the Internet. Lecture and discussion will involve use of vocabulary ranging from colloquial to highly sophisticated speech. Evaluation will be based on a combination of oral participation, grammatical assignments, and written and oral testing.

General grammatical topics:
Partial overview of some grammatical topics to be covered: review of grammar and syntax presented in Spanish 1 and 2, with a new look the uses of the preterite and the imperfect tenses and the verbs ser and estar; the prepositions por, para,en,de,and a; expressions with tener; direct and indirect object pronouns; use of the present perfect and pluperfect tenses; the use of past participles as adjectives; the present and past subjunctive.
